Building Family Traditions: Making Valentine’s Day Extra Speciall
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! Have you thought about how you’ll celebrate with your family?
While this holiday is often centered around romantic love, we also love using it as an opportunity to show extra love to our kids and encourage them to spread kindness to those around them.
The best part? Making Valentine’s Day special for your family doesn’t have to be expensive, time-consuming or stressful. In fact, the simplest traditions are often the ones that create the most meaningful memories.
Over the years, we’ve found that small, heartfelt traditions bring the most joy to our home. From special homemade Valentine’s cards to a festive breakfast, these little moments help us celebrate love in fun and thoughtful ways. Below are some of our favorite Valentine’s Day traditions—easy, enjoyable and perfect for making the day extra special with young kids!
Our Special Valentine’s Day Rituals
- Flower Shopping for Mom:
Every year, we make a point of selecting fresh flowers for Mom in advance. It’s our way of showing love and setting a warm, festive tone for the day. - Handcrafted Valentine’s Day Cards:
We spend quality time crafting personalized Valentine cards. Liam loves designing cards and little gifts for his teachers and friends, and the whole family enjoys the creative process as we share our heartfelt messages. - Themed Breakfast Together – Valentine’s Day Pancakes:
One of our favorite traditions is enjoying a festive pancake breakfast as a family. We add a dash of red to our pancakes to brighten the morning. Here’s our simple recipe:

Instructions for this Cute Valentine’s Day Breakfast:
Ingredients:
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 3 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- 2 tablespoon white sugar
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 ¼ cups milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Red or Pink food coloring
- 3 tablespoons butter melted
- 1 egg
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, baking powder and sugar, whisking until well mixed.
- In another bowl, mix the milk, melted butter, food coloring, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Gradually fold the liquid ingredients into the dry mix, stirring continuously until the batter is smooth and lump-free.
- Preheat your griddle or frying pan on medium-low heat and lightly coat with nonstick spray.
- Pour about ¼ cup of batter onto the pan for each pancake, cooking until the edges appear set and small bubbles form; flip and cook until the other side turns golden.
- Serve immediately with your favorite toppings like fresh berries, whipped cream, and a drizzle of maple syrup.
Variations & Substitutions:
- For an extra festive touch, use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to shape your pancakes into charming hearts.
- Prefer a natural approach? Omit the artificial food coloring.
- If you’re short on time, use your favorite store-bought pancake mix instead of making the batter from scratch.
- For dairy-free options, substitute non-dairy milk and use vegetable oil in place of butter.
Storage Tips:
These delightful treats can be frozen for up to one month. Once cooled completely, layer the pancakes between sheets of waxed paper and store in a reusable freezer bag. When you’re ready to enjoy them, simply reheat in the toaster until warm.
Why These Traditions Matter
For us, these rituals are more than just fun—they’re a way to teach love and kindness, create lasting memories and enjoy quality family time. Whether it’s the anticipation of presenting flowers to Mom, the joy of handmade cards or the delight of sharing a themed breakfast, each activity deepens our connection and fills our day with love.
