Our Handwriting Levels – Supporting Every Stage of Learning
At Liam’s Classroom, we know that every child learns at their own pace. That’s why our handwriting practice workbooks are designed in three progressive levels—helping children build confidence as they develop fine motor skills and master letter formation.
Each level features a different middle line height, allowing kids to gradually move from large, easy-to-trace letters to smaller, school-ready handwriting.

⭐ Level 1 – Beginner
Line Height: 10mm
Age Group: 4-5 years (Reception / Early Years)
Perfect for young learners starting their handwriting journey! With large letters and extra space, Level 1 focuses on developing pencil grip, fine motor skills, and confidence in basic letter formation. Kids practice tracing and writing uppercase and lowercase letters with big, easy-to-follow guides.
✅ Best for: Pre-K, Early Years, Beginners
✅ Focus: Letter recognition, basic tracing, large motor movements
⭐ Level 2 – Standard / School-Ready
Line Height: 6mm
Age Group: 5-7 years (Year 1 & Year 2)
Level 2 introduces a standard handwriting line size similar to school notebooks—like the popular Rhino “Learning to Write” books. Children begin to refine their letter formation, improve control, and develop more consistent handwriting as they start writing simple words and sentences.
✅ Best for: Kindergarten, early primary school
✅ Focus: Improved control, standard school writing size
⭐ Level 3 – Advanced
Line Height: 4mm
Age Group: 7-8 years (Year 3 and above)
Level 3 prepares children for smaller, more precise handwriting. With less space between lines, this level supports those ready to write independently, practice neatness, and transition toward joined-up handwriting (cursive).
✅ Best for: Confident writers, Year 3, or ages 7+
✅ Focus: Smaller writing, fine motor precision, cursive readiness
🎯 Why Progress Through Levels?
Learning to write is a journey that takes time and practice. Starting with big letters helps children develop the muscles and control they need before moving to standard and smaller sizes. By following our levels, kids build the confidence and skills needed for smooth, legible handwriting—step by step.
